Basic Advocacy Training
SER - Jobs for Progress of the Texas Gulf Coast has been awarded a grant by the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities to provide Basic Advocacy Training to adults with disabilities and/or parents of children with disabilities. The workshops are available in Spanish and English and will include the fundamentals of networking skills, letter writing, and how to contact local legislators. Workshops provide an opportunity for group interaction through activities and discussion. The ideal setting for the three hour workshop would be a support group meeting or health education seminar. Workshops are available at no cost to the host organization or participants. The following three workshops are the core curriculum of the Basic Advocacy Training provided by SER. The Foundations of Becoming a Self – Advocate is an interactive workshop and provides information necessary to become a self - determined, skilled and resourceful self - advocate. The topics are: History of People with Disabilities, Self - Advocacy, Self - Determination and People First Language. The Fundamentals of Legislative Advocacy provides the basic information about the local, state and federal government. Participants will learn about what they are entitled to receive under the law. This workshop also provides the opportunity to learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Community Outreach and Resources workshop provides the opportunity to create a personal strategic plan and learn where to find the resources needed to enhance their lives. Through group activities and mock situations, participants will be able to learn methods to effectively express their needs. Local community Resource Guides will be available for research.
